Pride of the Asian Community honoured at Asian Achievers Awards 2012
Winners of the coveted Asian Achievers Awards 2012 were announced at the esteemed award ceremony on Friday 14th September amid the fitting grandeur of Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London W1. The awards recognise the outstanding work of individuals from across all businesses and professions and acknowledge the accomplishments of the finest of the UK’s Asian community.
Hosted by Asian Business Publications Ltd (ABPL), the event marked its 12th year, more resplendent than ever before as 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the publishing group’s iconic newspapers, Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar.
Hosted by DJ Lora and Mark Ramprakash, Asian Achievers Awards 2012 welcomed a who’s who of high profile dignitaries, cross party politicians, celebrities and high achievers from the Asian community, with veteran of the silver screen, Hema Malini attending as Special Guest and representing the ceremony’s designated charity, Sarvam, a NGO that assists the integral development of rural India, including education for children. Their aim is to make villages across India self sufficient and prosperous as a total community. This initiative supports the entire community, consisting of children, parents, youth, physically challenged people, senior citizens and widowed mothers.
Other guests included cricketer Kevin Pietersen; Chief Guest, Rt. Hon Gregory Barker MP; Rt. Lord Archer, who conducted the evening’s charity auction which raised £121,000; Baroness Flather; Baroness Verma; Rt. Hon Sadiq Khan MP; Seema Malhotra MP; Lord Loomba; business leaders and philanthropists GP Hinduja and SP Hinduja; actor and producer Ray Panthaki, musicians Rishi Rich and Navin Kundra; and model/ actress Deana Uppal.
This year’s panel of judges comprised: Former England Cricketer Sir Ian Botham; Former India Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar; Former Daily Mirror Editor Richard Wallace; the first Gujarati to represent the Conservative Party in the House of Lords Lord Popat; Cross Bench member of the House of Lords Baroness Prashar; and former diver and one of the youngest participants in the 1948 Olympics Peter Elliot

In his opening speech, Mr. CB Patel, Chairman, Asian Business Publications Ltd. (ABPL) said, “It is a wonderful evening. We began the year with Her Majesty’s diamond jubilee celebration, followed by the ruby anniversary of Gujarat Samachar and Asian Voice. We have raised £5million for charitable causes over the past ten years. Today we feel honoured to support another such worthwhile cause – Sarvam. Hema Malini, who is a gem and a great Bollywood star, has come all the way to be a part of this gala evening. Rt Hon Greg Barker, who is a Cabinet Minister and also a Minister of India, is amongst us as our Chief Guest. It’s a fantastic evening of celebration and we are having a great time.”
Asian Voice Special Award for Vision & Enterprise: Samrat Bhandari
A graduate in Law with Masters in Finance Regulation and Risk Management. He has dual qualification as a Company Secretary from UK (ICSA) and India (ICSI). He has also studied at Harvard Business School, and ISMA Centre, University of Reading. Samrat has led several listing and M&A transactions in Europe. He holds positions on the Board of several PLC’s and has been in the Financial Services Business for more than 15 years.
